I program one of my Fn buttons to zoom to 50% or 100%. In the second photo, you could simply focus on the boat and the dark guy piloting the boat would be in focus. Anything close to the same distance would be adequate. I commonly choose an alternate but nearby target with similar framing to pick up the subject. The common thread is your subjects are low contrast, in shadow, and small in the frame. Wide Small uses nearest subject priority and would normally eliminate a miss that picks up the background. Face/Eye and 3D are irrelevant at that distance. If you were closer and the girls on the beach were more tightly grouped and moving around, I might try Dynamic to pick up one of them. I'd normally use Wide Small for such a scene, but the alternative would be Single. In both cases you are looking for a small subject with a cluttered scene. For zoomed-in shots move farther away from the target. For wider shots move the camera closer to the target. With zoom lenses you might want to test the AF at both the wide and tele end of the zoom range. Put the camera level on a tripod at the same distance from the target as you would normally shoot your subjects. You can test the AF under more laboratory-like conditions at home.Īcquire a test target (I use fairly cheap the Spyder LensCal, ) and calibrate every lens that you use with the camera. Is the firmware of the FTZ adapter up to date?ĭo some more research on this issue yourself before contacting Nikon support. Is the firmware of these lenses up to date?ĭo you use F-mount glass (adapted with Nikon FTZ)? I have absolutely no issues with the focusing of my Z9, paired with my native Z mount lenses (24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8). Because 3D tracking also supports eye detect I have the eye detect set to humans only (since there are no animals or vehicles performing on stage). I'm sorry I erased my previous tries but I never thought I would need them and figured it's just me not the camera. If I try a fourth time to reset and setup I'll try Thom Hogan. I even followed Hudson's advice and one of the 3 times I reset the camera I did the basic on A and setup Action in B as per his videos. I'm thinking of resetting the camera again to the way it came from Canon.

And I can see it's focused on what comes back as OOF I have it set not to take a shot unless it's focused. The Z9 comes back and tells me it's focused. I've tried the back focus button and the shutter half press. I've tried 3D, single point, wide and small focus areas. Here are two shots as examples of it not focusing. I've had the same results with all lenses. The camera is new, not been hit, and acted this way from day one even at factory settings. I also have to hit the OK button multiple times before the focus point goes to the center. The camera keeps hunting, switches to something that is not a person, goes crazy across the EVF like a bug all over the place, then it back or front focuses a lot. I've been having issues getting my new Z9's focus point to latch onto a model's face.
